Curriculum Connections

In the Victorian Curriculum F-10, the Humanities learning area includes Civics and Citizenship, Economics and Business, Geography and History. A global perspective is reflected in the Civics and Citizenship Curriculum through which students explore the systems that shape society and learn about what it means to contribute as active, informed and responsible citizens.

Civics and Citizenship Curriculum

Civics and Citizenship is "essential in enabling students to become active and informed citizens who participate in and sustain Australia's democracy". Through this study, students explore the nature of citizenship, diversity and identity in contemporary society and gain the knowledge and skills necessary to question, understand and contribute to the world in which they live.

The learning in Civics and Citizenship aims to ensure students develop a sense of what it means to be an active and informed citizen and the capacities and dispositions needed to participate in the civic life of their nation at a local, regional and global level. Students are encouraged to develop the general skills and capabilities of an appreciation of diverse perspectives, empathy, collaboration, negotiation, self-awareness and intercultural understanding.

There is a focus on contemporary issues which provide a means of developing students’ thinking and critical capacities. These issues provide models of the ways that citizens can activity participate, question and improve democracy.

Through Civics and Citizenship, students explore and develop their understanding and viewpoints about:

  • civic identity
  • roles in the community
  • the rights and responsibilities of citizens
  • developing their connections to the school and community
  • values which underpin democratic communities such as freedom, equality, responsibility, accountability, respect, tolerance and inclusion
  • skills and knowledge in making judgments, forming conclusions and making plans for action
  • their sense of school, community and civic engagement and participation.

    Intercultural Capability

    The Intercultural Capability explores the interactions that are part of everyday life in an increasingly multicultural and globalised world. Intercultural Capabilities focus on students developing intercultural knowledge, skills and understandings and what it means to become responsible local and global citizens, equipped for living and working together in an interconnected world. Aims Intercultural capability aims to develop knowledge, understandings and skills to enable students to:

    • demonstrate an awareness of and respect for cultural diversity within the community
    • reflect on how intercultural experiences influence attitudes, values and beliefs
    • recognise the importance of acceptance and appreciation of cultural diversity for a cohesive community.
