Read the document and consider the following questions in relation to the amount of time your students have for Independent Reading:

  • Do my students have ample opportunities to read in school and at home every week of the year?
  • Are there school routines that prevent my students from having access to the best reading resources every school day, such as someone collecting books from my classroom before the end of term? If so, what can I do about this?
  • Do my students continue to read outside school hours? If not, what can I do about this?
  • Is the material for home reading of the very best quality it should be?
  • Do I allow my students to take the material from their book bag home for continued reading? If not, why not? Does it make sense for students to continue their reading at home? How can you ensure that this occurs?

If some of my students do not have sufficient reading resources at home, how can I make sure that resources are available from school and other locations, particularly during school vacations?

This is an important extract and one that affects the whole school community. High levels of literacy require the community's support.

Perhaps you could consider communicating with your school community through a newsletter about the importance of Independent Reading, possibly working with your literacy coordinator or literacy coach to develop such a newsletter. Try to include some of the information from the documents that you have been studying.

Consider helping to write a detailed policy for Independent Reading and reading conferences for your school, or at least for your year level.
