Critical and Creative Thinking Capability

The Victorian Curriculum Foundation-10 Critical and Creative Thinking Capability encourages students to respond effectively to environmental, social and economic challenges that require them to "be creative, innovative, enterprising and adaptable, with the motivation, confidence and skills to use critical and creative thinking purposefully".

Critical and creative thinking are strongly linked and are fundamental to learning across the curriculum. There is explicit attention to and application of thinking skills to enable students to develop self-awareness through reflection, understanding the processes they can use to manage their own thinking, knowledge and learning.

Through the critical and creative thinking capability, students will develop an:
  • understanding of thinking processes and an ability to manage and apply these intentionally
  • skills and learning dispositions that support logical, strategic, flexible and adventurous thinking
  • confidence in evaluating thinking and thinking processes across a range of familiar and unfamiliar contexts.

Critical and Creative Thinking is organised into three interrelated strands:
  • 1. Questions and Possibilities: Explore the nature of questioning and a range of processes and techniques to develop ideas
  • 2. Reasoning: Explore how to compose, analyse and evaluate arguments and reasoning
  • 3. Meta-Cognition: Explore the use of strategies to understand, manage and reflect on thinking and learning processes.

The Digital Technologies Curriculum

The Digital Technologies curriculum enables students to become confident and creative developers of digital solutions through the application of information systems and specific ways of thinking about problem solving.

The Digital Technologies curriculum comprises of three related strands:

  • Digital Systems
  • Data and Information and
  • Creating Digital Solutions

Students draw on the content of the Data and Information, and Digital Systems strands when applying processes and technical skills pertaining to the Creating Digital Solutions strand. Within this strand, students apply the interrelated processes of analysing, designing, developing and evaluating to create digital solutions.

Creating Digital Solutions

Learning in the Creating Digital Solutions strand emphasises the value of collaboration when students work together to create solutions to problems. This requires skills in using digital systems and computational, design and systems thinking, and interacting safely by using appropriate technical and social protocols. Learning in this strand focuses on the student exploring the interrelated processes and associated skills by which they can create digital solutions. They engage in the four processes of analysing, designing, developing and evaluating.
