The Victorian School of Languages (VSL) is a government school with a strong history of commitment to the provision of language programs for students in Years 1 to 12 who do not have access to the study of those languages in their mainstream schools. The school`s language program is delivered through face-to-face teaching in language centres across the state and through Distance Education mode.
The VSL developed an entire online course in Chinese for years 7 & 8 that can be offered to any student in the state. This is supported with traditional distance learning educators contact via telephone, email and mail outs.
Principal of Birchip P-12, John Richmond, described how his school uses Polycom to connect to VSL offerings:
"Birchip P-12 School regularly uses the two Polycom HD VC at the school. They form an integral element in the delivery of a wider curriculum for our students and students from afar. The Polycom videoconferencing is used by five individual students to access a variety of languages delivered from Melbourne based VSL. I request weekly VC lessons for our students to accompany the correspondence notes to make the course relevant and active. Last year one of our students received a higher ATAR due to her performance in Italian delivered by VSL over the VC medium."
