Key knowledge

  • The role of non-government organisations based in Australia in promoting global health and sustainable human development Programs focusing on literacy, food security, HIV/AIDS and malaria, immunisation, safe water and sanitation in terms of:
    • reasons for each program
    • types of aid involved in the programs
    • implementation of the programs
    • their contribution to the achievement of sustainable human development.

Key skill

  • Identify and explain different types of aid and evaluate their contribution towards achieving global health and sustainable human development

Learning intention

Students gathered information about various aid programs and developed an understanding of their contribution to global health and sustainable human development


Students will use their smartphone or iPad to scan QR codes that link to specific aid programs. Then use the information to complete a task handout, where they identify and evaluate specific information related to the aid programs. After this, students follow another link that takes them to a customised map with geographical and statistical information on each aid program, which they record in their task handout.

How will digital learning be integrated into this lesson?

QR codes and QR readers—a QR code a two-dimensional image that encodes text, a URL or other information, while the QR reader interprets the encoded information.

Google Maps Engine Lite enables the user to plot specific information on maps.


To gather and analyse information from a range of specified webpages relating to aid programs and global health and human development.

To geographically identify location of aid programs in relation to Australia.


Instruct students prior to the lesson to download a QR reader.

Coloured posters with QR codes are displayed around the room prior to the start of the lesson.

Introduce the lesson and distribute task handouts (in hard copy or electronic). Then go through the handout so students understanding what they need to complete.

Lesson procedure (2 periods)

  • Students need to download a QR reader on their iPad or smart phone prior to the lesson (QR readers are free to download)
  • Students scan the QR codes located around the room, and are taken to a website related to an aid program.
  • For each QR code and aid program, students are to complete the task handout.
  • Students click on the link located in the task handout to be taken to a customised Google Map with icons showing the location of the aid programs. They hover over each pinpoint and record the details in the task handout. Students click on the icon to obtain statistics about the issues being addressed e.g. literacy, food security etc. Students record the location and stats in their handout. The teacher facilitates the task and assists any students who are having trouble.
